MPEG-2 is a video compression format that reduces the size and data rate of video files. It is the standard used by DVD players. MPEG-2 reduces the files size by removing redundancy with-in frames and between groups of frames. It has three frames types they are grouped together in a unit know as GOP (Group Of Picture). The three frame types are I-frames (intra), P-frames (predicted), and B-frames (bi-directional).
Problem 1: I have mpeg-2 files that I must edit for my job. Streamclip will not convert it. Here are my computer specs:
Mac OS 10.6.2
Quicktime 7.6.3 AND QuickTime 10.0 (snow leopard version)
Final Cut Pro 7.0.1
QUESTION 1: Will "Mpeg2 Playback" solve this conversion problem?
QUESTION 2: If YES: Will the "Mpeg2 Playback" conversion be compatible with FCP for editing?
QUESTION 3: If YES: Does the Apple Store carry "Mpeg 2 Playback" software, or must i order it online?
Problem 2: Is there any way to edit MPEG 2 files in FCP 7 without having to convert them before import?
I'm curious as to whether I can download a CODEC that will allow me to edit MPEG 2 files in FCP.
